Candida is a fungus, which is a form of yeast. A small amount of it lives in your mouth and intestines, where it aids with digestion. The ‘good’ bacteria in your gut typically keep your Candida levels in check. However, a poor diet, certain medications, environmental toxins, and stress can lead to your Candida population getting out of control. When Candida overgrows, it can break down the wall of your intestine and enter your bloodstream, releasing toxic byproducts and causing leaky gut. This can lead to a range of health problems from digestive issues to depression — even to autoimmunity.
